Gallaserve
July 12th, 2006New York Cares Day!!!!
Hey Everyone! The following information was included in an email to the Gallaserve listserv.
For all of you who have signed up for New York Cares Day, I have some information for you!
When: THIS Saturday, October 20th. If you would like to travel with the group we will be meeting at:
**8:15AM at WEST 4TH STREET Subway Station**
I will be waiting outside the subway entrance on the corner of 3rd Street and 6th Ave, near the basketball courts. Please arrive on time!
I would encourage everybody to travel with the group but if it is more convenient for you to travel directly to the site the directions are as follows.
Directions: Take the C to Rockaway Ave. Exit toward Thomas Boyland St and Fulton. Follow Thomas Boyland toward Herkiner until you run into East New York Ave. Make a left onto East New York Ave. Then make a right onto Bristol St. The building will be on your left. The walk from the subway is about 15 minutes.
Where: We are going to a Crossroads school and the students that attend this school are juvenile delinquents (ages of 12-17). Our site-captain is Gloria Dawson.
What: We will be painting murals, straight painting classrooms and doing some gardening of the school’s courtyard. . The school prides itself on its programs to help the students transition to the regular New York City Public School System upon release.
Expect: The day will begin at 9:30 and go until 3:30 with an after party for all volunteers afterwards (but it is 21 and up). We will stop for lunch around 1PM. The school asks us not to bring food. Gallatin Student Council will be covering lunch. You will check in at 9:30 with the registrars, so please have your ID ready.
*Try to bring as little as possible onto the site as security is very tight- *no bags please*
**Please note we will have to leave our cell phones in a locker as per school regulations. We will have labels to put on them so there is no confusion about whose cell phone is whose.
**Also, I don’t think this applies to anybody but as a reminder, all volunteers must be 18 years old or older because of the security of this particular location.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions. See you Saturday morning!

Gallaserve Description:
Gallaserve is an initiative led by the Gallatin Student Council that seeks to build the Gallatin community while serving the greater New York City and world community. The Vice President of GSC will oversee Gallaserve as part of his/her responsibilities while in office. S/He will be responsible for updating the Gallaserve website with service opportunity listings, managing the ListServ and chairing a committee of students interested in planning and organizing community service events at Gallatin.
More than anything Gallaserve is a political structure that ensures the longevity of community service at Gallatin by building it into the job description of GSC and its officers. Gallaserve (as a committee) will NOT exclusively plan and operate all community service programs at Gallatin but rather will support new and existence programs that students have, while working on its own to provide unique programming.
If you would like to organize a community service program and would like support, publicity, or help organizing the program Gallaserve is here for you. If you’re interested, have questions or suggestions please email:
